Executive Summary

This case study examines the implementation of the Miyawaki method of afforestation in urban Bangalore, specifically focusing on a 2-acre plot in the eastern part of the city. The project, initiated in June 2021, aimed to create a dense, native forest ecosystem in an urban setting to improve biodiversity, air quality, and community well-being.

Background

The Miyawaki method, developed by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki, involves planting native species very densely to create forests that grow much faster than conventional plantations. This approach is particularly valuable in urban areas where space is limited but the need for green cover is high.

Methodology

The project followed these key steps:

  1. Soil analysis and preparation, including the addition of organic matter and mulch
  2. Selection of 40+ native species based on their ecological roles
  3. Dense planting (3-5 saplings per square meter)
  4. Regular maintenance for the first two years
  5. Community involvement in planting and maintenance

Results

After 24 months, the following results were observed:

  • Growth rate 10x faster than conventional plantations
  • 90% survival rate of planted saplings
  • Increase in bird species from 8 to 29
  • Measurable improvement in local air quality
  • Formation of a self-sustaining forest ecosystem

Challenges

The project faced several challenges, including:

  • Initial water requirements during establishment phase
  • Protection from encroachment
  • Managing community expectations about forest appearance

The Miyawaki method has proven highly effective in creating dense, biodiverse forest ecosystems in urban Bangalore. The approach offers significant advantages in terms of growth rate, biodiversity support, and ecosystem services compared to conventional urban greening approaches.
